Saying Goodbye

Last January when a furry, sweet, hungry cat showed up at our door I had no idea what a blessing she would be.  I tried hard to find her owner and when no one seemed to know who she belonged to, I tried to find someone that would take her.  Eventually we all fell in love with her.  Mike named her Chong before we knew she was a "she" and since we already have a "Cheech".  In hind sight, the name really didn't fit her (or our family!).  I'll be sure to name the next pet :)

Chong loved to follow the boys every where they went.  She was the only cat I know that would run after a ball when you threw it.  She didn't mind at all when the boys would run around with swords or drive their little vehicles close to her.  She LOVED our boys and our neighbor boys too.  When Mike did yard work she was right there with him.  She proudly caught mice, moles and birds.  She was awesome.

The best part was she gave us kittens.  It was an experience our boys (and Mike and I) will never forget.  Did I really want to deal with kittens?  No.  But the joy they brought us was more than I could imagine.
Watching the kittens grow, learn and discover new things and play and play and play.
All 4 of us would sit at our kitchen counter that overlooks our yard and laugh while we watched them all play together.  The boys dreaded the day we would give the kittens away.  But we all knew that a home was a better life for them than living outside, especially near a busy road.

About 3 weeks ago we said "goodbye" to the kittens.  The gray one, named "Sophie", went to a friend from work.  And the black and orange one went to a friend that I worked with at E-town many years ago.  We've already gone to visit the black and orange kitten (named Niko and Bella).  They are inseparable.  I'm so glad they get to be together.  Both of my friends send frequent pictures of the kittens and we LOVE seeing them happy at their new homes.  We all still miss them a lot, but we know being inside a loving home is a much better life.

About a week after the kittens left the boys and I were sitting at the kitchen counter making a birthday card for our neighbor.  I looked out the window and saw a dog with Chong in its mouth.  A stray pit bull came into our yard and went into the spring house where Chong spent a lot of time.  It ate Chong's food and then attacked her.  It was very traumatic to see.  Chong looked like a chew toy in the dog's mouth and the worst part is... the boys saw it happen.  Mike tried to get the dog, but it ran off.  We called the police, but they weren't able to get it.

Chong lived, but wasn't doing well.  It was Saturday evening so vet offices were closed.  My mom drove with me about 45 minutes away in the pouring rain to an emergency pet clinic.  The vet thought Chong looked good for what she had been through.  She got an antibiotic shot, a shot for the pain, and she had 4 "little" puncture wounds that the vet cleaned out.  She sent us home and gave us hope that Chong would be OK.  When we got home and I got her out of her cat carrier she started walking backwards.  She didn't seem OK.  We made her comfortable and hoped for the best.  The next morning when I went to check on her she was no longer living.  I think she had a lot of internal damage and bleeding.  We were all very upset.  We miss her so much.  The only positive thing I can think of is at least it wasn't one of the kids walking in on the dog in the spring house.  I really believe the dog would have attacked one of them.   The next few days were awful because we didn't know where the dog was or if it was coming back.  The boys were not allowed outside without one of us watching.  Poor Adam is still really struggling.  He was my kid that really didn't worry about much and now he has a lot of anxiety.  He won't walk upstairs by himself because is is "scared of a dog or bear up there".  He won't leave my side when we are at home and it gets frustrating, but I feel so sorry for him at the same time.

We buried Chong by the creek because she loved to go down and get a drink of fresh spring water.  I caught a glimpse of this a few days after we buried her...
Even though we only knew her for about 6 months, she brought us SO many wonderful memories!

Dates

I mentioned a while ago that for Christmas I got Mike a "Year of Dates".  Every month he opens a new envelope with a prepaid date for the two of us for that month.  Well we got a little behind.  The end of the school year was crazy with sports schedules so we've had fun catching up on some of the dates we couldn't do during the school year.  Both boys go to daycare on a Tuesday and Mike has most of June off from work so we've been going on day dates while the boys are at Linda's house.

One of our dates started off with a bike ride on the rail trail to Mt. Gretna.  We rode around the Camp Meeting area and then back home.
Afterwards we went to a spa in Hershey.  They offered pedicures for men.  Mike got the "Troegenator" They poured a Troegs beer in his foot water and gave him a beer to drink.  This was good timing since he had just come home from a 3 day hiking trip and his feet were aching.
I got a pedicure too.  It was a lot of fun!

Afterwards we had lunch at Troegs Brewery.  Neither of us had ever been there before.

This past Tuesday was our best date so far.  It was to Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center.  We did zip lining and a high ropes course.  It was SO MUCH FUN and only about 20 minutes away.  I think I heard about it from a Groupon.

It's hard to see, but Mike is ziplining upside down in this picture.

Such a fun day.  We look forward to going back again and taking the boys when they are a little older.

Our Summer So Far (in pictures)

Lots of pool time

Special time spent with Bea
We've been able to watch Caleb a few days this summer.  He's so much fun!
I love that he is already close to his cousins.  Owen takes such good care of him (Adam too!).
My boys are soaking up all the time they can playing with our neighbors before they go on vacation.

Silly Selfies on the John Deere.

At the very beginning of the summer, Mike went on a 3 day hiking trip on the West Rim Trail.  He had a great time.
Adam has always loved music and instruments.  We've been taking him to watch the live music on the deck on Sundays at the QT and afterwards he comes home so inspired to learn to play the guitar.  He would get out Mike's old guitar and play and sing.  It's the cutest thing.  Well Lala got him his very own guitar and we are going to try a few lesson and see how it goes.  He's young, but it worth a shot! He can't wait.
We gave away all 3 kittens last weekend.  Sniff Sniff.  We really miss them.
Cheech got his annual summer haircut.

It's been a wonderful summer so far!!

Hello Summertime!

Last Friday was my last day of work for the summer.  Owen's last day was Thursday.  Mike has most of June off work.  We are all very excited!!

I have about 200 pictures on my phone that I've taken recently.  Here's a few...

Some of Owen's fan club.  He's had a lot of baseball games lately.

He's had a pretty good season considering his team is much younger than most of the other teams they play.  Owen looks so little out there compared to most of the other players.  He has come SO far this season.  He wasn't all that into it, especially after he got hit in the mouth with the baseball.  But as the season has progressed he's really started to enjoy it and gained more confidence.  The kids on his team are such a good group of kids.
These 3 were snuggling up to keep warm during a game on a chilly night.

The Rader's were brave enough to have the team over after their last game.  They still have playoffs so the season is not officially over.  The boys enjoyed a dip in the hot tub- HILARIOUS.

Memorial Day Weekend
We took a trip to Raystown Lake to spend some time with Papa and Finney.  The boys had a blast and didn't care one bit that the lake was was chilly.
Owen driving the boat...

These goofballs love to make each other laugh.  They make up little silly commercials.
Owen is old enough to start learning how to take care of the boat.
Owen stayed an extra night with Papa and Finney and we came home with Adam.  The three of us went out to dinner and Adam enjoyed some wings.  This boys LOVES wings.
On Memorial Day we had a picnic at Beth and Eric's house.
At the end of May, Owen had his final mile for his Kids Run Crest Marathon Challenge.  He ran 25 miles and then on the last day they ran their 26th mile.  He ran his final mile in 6 minutes 50 seconds.  Crazy!
Adam decided to run a mile too.  He ran the entire thing without stopping.  We were really proud of him!
After all that running it felt good to jump in our neighbor's pool for a swim.
Adam was able to jump off the dive for the first time and swim to the edge of the pool without a floaty.

Last weekend Mike and I went to a baby shower for friends of ours that are having their first baby in August.  We are thrilled for them!!

Owen's friend, Gage, had his birthday party this past weekend.  It was a flag football and basketball party and Adam was allowed to tag along too.  He's really started trying to play with the big kids lately, but he sticks by his brother's side.  It's so cute watching Owen take him under his wing and look out for him.  He's a good big brother.

A before-church picture.  Probably one of the last times I can dress them alike.  Owen is starting to think it's weird to dress like his brother.  Darn.

Go Barcelona!!

And then there's the kittens that have brought us so much joy.  The boys were both in tears last night at the thought that they will all go to new homes in the next few weeks.  What a wonderful experience.

My view out my kitchen window.

And now I'm caught up on the last few weeks.  I hope to be better about blogging this summer!
